Drafted 26th overall in 2023, Sheppard has shown flashes of brilliance, earning more minutes as the season progresses. His recent performances have fans and analysts buzzing about his potential.
Who Is Ben Sheppard?
Ben Sheppard played college basketball at Belmont University, where he developed into a reliable scorer and defender. Standing at 6’6″, his versatility allows him to guard multiple positions while stretching the floor with his shooting. The Pacers saw his potential early, and he’s proving them right.
His journey from a mid-major program to the NBA is inspiring. Many doubted if he could transition smoothly, but his work ethic and adaptability have silenced critics.
Breaking Down Sheppard’s Recent Performances
In the Pacers’ recent games, Sheppard has stepped up in crucial moments. Here’s a quick look at his impact:
- Scoring Efficiency: Sheppard is shooting over 40% from three-point range, a rare feat for a rookie.
- Defensive Presence: His length and quickness make him a disruptive perimeter defender.
- Playmaking: While not a primary ball-handler, he makes smart passes and rarely turns it over.
One standout game came against the Boston Celtics, where he hit clutch threes and played lockdown defense on All-Star Jayson Tatum. Moments like these show why the Pacers trust him in high-pressure situations.
Why Sheppard Fits Perfectly with the Pacers
Indiana plays an up-tempo, high-scoring style under coach Rick Carlisle. Sheppard’s skill set aligns perfectly:
- Shooting: The Pacers lead the league in offensive rating, and Sheppard’s floor-spacing helps.
- Versatility: He can play alongside Tyrese Haliburton or lead the second unit.
- Youth Movement: Indiana is building around young talent, and Sheppard fits the timeline.
His ability to play within the system without forcing shots has earned Carlisle’s trust. As the season progresses, his role will likely expand.

NBA analysts have taken notice of Sheppard’s growth. ESPN’s Zach Lowe recently praised his “elite off-ball movement,” while NBA.com highlighted his defensive metrics among rookies.
Even opposing coaches have complimented him. After a recent game, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla called him “a problem” due to his relentless energy.
