The Early Days: How Pete Alonso Became Baseball’s Home Run King
Pete Alonso’s path to MLB stardom began long before he donned the New York Mets jersey. Born in Tampa, Florida, Alonso’s talent was evident from his high school days. He attended the University of Florida, where he refined his batting skills and developed a reputation as a power hitter. Despite this, his road wasn’t always smooth. Many scouts wondered if his size would hinder his agility and defensive skills, but Alonso proved them wrong.
Selected by the Mets in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Alonso quickly made a name for himself in the minor leagues. By 2019, he exploded onto the MLB scene with a record-breaking rookie season, smashing 53 home runs and earning the National League Rookie of the Year award. For perspective, hitting more than 50 home runs as a rookie is a feat only a handful of players in history have matched.
