He began skating at a young age, following the common Swedish tradition where ice hockey is more than just a sport—it’s a way of life during the long winter months. His early training wasn’t marked by flashy techniques, but rather by consistent hard work and sharpened discipline.
He climbed through the ranks of local youth leagues, standing out with his sharp vision on the ice and an uncanny ability to anticipate opponents’ moves. Being picked by one of the NHL’s iconic teams was a clear statement that scouts see something special in him. However, like many European players, he continued to develop in Sweden before moving across the Atlantic.
During the 2022-2023 season, Holmberg played an essential role for Växjö Lakers, helping them contend fiercely in the SHL. His stats include:

Those numbers tell an impressive story for a young center who is sharpening his two-way skills. His balanced offensive and defensive play makes him a strong asset for any team. In fact, when he transitioned to North American ice with the Toronto Marlies (the AHL affiliate of the Maple Leafs) during the 2023 season, he showed promise by adapting quickly to the smaller rink and faster pace.
Adjusting to the North American Game
The shift from European hockey to North American hockey isn’t easy. The rink dimensions, style of play, and physical demands vary significantly. Holmberg’s ability to adapt has been remarkable. He’s embraced the challenges by focusing on:
- Speed and Agility: North American hockey demands quicker decision-making and faster footwork due to the smaller rink size.
- Physical Play: The game is more aggressive, requiring players to improve their stamina and strength.
- Communication: Integrating into the team environment smoothly, emphasizing chemistry with linemates.
These areas are where Holmberg continues to grow, with many coaches and analysts praising his work ethic and positive attitude off the ice. His teammates describe him as approachable and hardworking, qualities that help boost team morale and cohesion.
